Title: Club Dead

Author: Charlaine Harris

Series: Sookie Stackhouse series

Book: #3

Published: 29th April 2009

Goodreads rating: 4.04

Sookie Stackhouse always found it difficult to date – she’s cute, but not many guys are comfortable with her mind-reading abilities. But vampires have no problems with Sookie’s talent – she can’t pick up much of anything form the undead.

But there’s only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with – at least voluntarily – right now, and that’s Bill. But recently he’s been a little distant – in another state distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric has an idea where to find him, and next thing Sookie knows, she’s off to Jackson, Mississippi, to mingle with the underworld at Club Dead. It’s a dangerous little haunt where the elusive vampire society can go to chill out and suck down some Type O – but when Sookie finally finds Bill, he’s not only in trouble, but caught in an act of serious betrayal. Should she save him, or sharpen some stakes?

First Sentence

Bill was hunched over the computer when I let myself in his house.

My thoughts

I’m mainly reading these books cause I love Eric. Finally up to book 3 and Eric is starting to show up more, which is to my delight. However, Sookie and Bill’s relationship still annoys me to no end. I never understood their attraction in the first place. And also if you find out your boyfriend is cheating on you why would you risk your life to save him in the first place? I was a little baffled with that concept. And also I understand that the writer tries to make Sookie into this stylish and fashionable but seriously some of the things she describes are horrid!

I really enjoyed Alcide’s character but he’s obsession with his ex is a little worrying to me. And it screams trouble for Sookie in the future I think. I loved the little snippets into Eric’s long life like learning English as a second language at the community college in the 70s and Sookie’s word of the day calendar were all pretty good. This book was still on the cheesy side and I find most of the characters boring and on the verge of annoying. For me this book is like junk food it satisfies for a little while but on the whole it’s horrible.

I didn’t particular enjoy the style of writing, there were parts that I thought some of the interactions between the characters were quite juvenile. Harris tries to tease the readers with a different aspect of the world but because we are reading in Sookie’s point of view not much actual information is given cause she’s not really part of that world which gets frustrating when it is overused.

Keeping in mind that this is basically junk food of the book world it’s great for those days that you want a quick read.

My rating: 3/5
